Summer Tips for Pro Dog Parents

Summer in Florida is here, and while it brings sunshine and fun, it also presents unique challenges for our furry friends. Ensuring your dog stays safe and healthy in the heat is crucial. Here are some essential tips to help you and your pup enjoy a happy, safe summer!

1. Stay Hydrated Always provide fresh, clean water for your dog. Carry a portable water bowl on walks and outings to keep your pup hydrated.

2. Avoid the Heat Limit outdoor activities to early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Dogs can overheat quickly, so avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.

3. Never Leave Dogs in Cars Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. Never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle.

4. Paw pavement can burn your dog's paws. Test the ground with your hand; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog. Stick to grassy areas or invest in dog booties for protection.

5. Provide Shade If your dog spends time outside, ensure they have access to shaded areas. A cool, shaded spot can help prevent overheating.

6. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, and vomiting are signs of heatstroke. If you notice these symptoms, move your dog to a cooler area, provide water, and contact your vet immediately.

7. Grooming Regular grooming helps keep your dog cool. Brush out any excess fur and consider a trim, but avoid shaving your dog completely as their coat protects against sunburn.

8. Protect Against Parasites Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, which can carry diseases. Keep your dog on a vet-recommended parasite prevention program.

9. Safe Swimming If your dog loves to swim, always supervise them around water. Rinse off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt, and prevent ear infections by drying their ears thoroughly.

10. Be Mindful of Fireworks and Storms Florida's summer nights often bring fireworks and thunderstorms. Create a safe, quiet space indoors where your dog can feel secure during these loud events.

By following these tips, you can help ensure your dog stays safe, healthy, and happy all summer long. If you have any questions or need further advice, don’t hesitate to contact your vet.

Wishing you and your pup a fantastic summer!

Warm regards,

Molly
